The inaugural session was attended by Ms. Renu Vig, Director, UIET, Ms. Dolly Bhasin, a Knowledge Entrepreneur, Dr. Rakesh Tuli, UIET and Prof. S.R. Kale Professor from IIT Delhi who was the chief guest. Dr. Tuliand , welcomed the guests and shared the themes and format of the contest. After inaugurating the session Prof.Vig shared the significance of innovation in today’s world and encouraged students to be creative in their approach to develop new solutions. Prof. S.R. Kale discussed the students should follow while working on an innovative project through the approach being followed at IIT Delhi and IIT Mandi. He also presented a snapshot of some projects developed by students of IIT Delhi.
Ms. Dolly Bhasin shared the approach of Design Thinking for Innovation and its application to solve real world problems and shared the drivers of innovation in Smart City context for the benefit of the participants. Mr. Mohit Rawat conducted a technicalsession on the methodology that can be followed to convert their project idea into a prototype and ultimately a commercial product
Design-centred innovation is a force multiplier that can help the country move up the value chain, making Indian industry globally competitive. In this context, Ministry of Human Resource Development launched a National Initiative for Design Innovation in the Twelfth Plan. Under this plan 20 Institutes have been selected to be set up Design Innovation Centres (DIC), including the one at UIET at Punjab University, Chandigarh. This DIC acts as the hub while PEC University of Technology, , Central Scientific Instruments Organisation and Dr. HarvanshSingh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital are the spokes for DIC. DIC UIET has some ongoing innovations under the mentorship of UIET faculty Dr. Naveen Aggarwal, Dr. Y.P. Verma and Dr. Prashant Jindal on themes of traffic sensing, energy management and medical devices.

Many ideas were received from students under the four themes and around 25 of them were selected for the final round and were invited to present the ideas at the DIC centre in Chandigarh.
Some unique ideas like Human Bite force measurement device, Oral Music Device for Deaf, Smart Road MRO system, etc. were presented which have massive adoption possibility. Some great innovative ideas on Traffic management using wireless, IOT and other smart technologies were presented. Few app ideas around smart mobility and machine learning through data collected in real time were centred around Smart cities. Few ideas presented on Energy harvesting included Geothermal, Piezoelectric and Renewable energy were quite well developed and quite unique. The medical assisted devices included a wide range of ideas from Dental category to posture correction to Oxygen Humidifiers to fall detection and alert systems and collagen based aerosols for burns.
The innovations made the jury’s job difficult. Three winning teams in each category were presented cash awards and all teams were given certificates. Overall, the remarks of jury was – “the quality of some entries are almost of international standards and while some of the ideas were near ready to roll out for field trialsmost of them needed to work on a working
